The watery deep as contrasted with sky and earth (Ps 77:16). It is the abode of the dead (Rom 10:7), the place where evil spirits are confined (Luke 8:31; Rev 9:1-11; Rev 20:1-3), and the place from which the Antichrist will ascend (Rev 11:7; Rev 17:8). See also Hades; Hell; Sheol.
