Nebo

Nebo (Nee´boh)

1 A Babylonian god (Isa 46:1) considered the son of Marduk. His statue was paraded with Marduk’s in Babylon at the New Year Festival, setting the context for Isaiah’s taunt in (Isa 15:1-9). 2 A Moabite city (Num 32:3; Num 32:38), probably modern Khirbet Mekhayyet, about five miles southwest of Hesban. It was part of Sihon’s kingdom (Num 21:26-30). Assigned to the tribes Reuben and Gad (Num 32:3), it was Moabite under Mesha (mid-ninth century BCE), and it figured in the prophecies of both Isaiah (Isa 15:2) and Jeremiah (Jer 48:1. Jer 48:22). 3 A mountain promontory (Deut 32:49) from which Moses was called to view Canaan at the time of his death, modern Jebel en-Nebu. 4 The ancestor of some returning exiles (Ezra 2:29; Ezra 10:43; and possibly (Neh 7:33) who may have been associated with a town in Judah, Nuba, six miles northwest of Hebron.
