Ephrathah


Ef´ruh-thuh; Heb., “fertility”

1 The wife of Caleb, a descendant of Judah; the mother of Hur, the ancestor of Bethlehem, Kiriath-jearim, and Beth-gader (1Chr 2:50; 1Chr 4:4). She is also called Ephrath (1Chr 2:19). 2 Another name for Bethlehem or the area immediately surrounding it (Ruth 4:11; Mic 5:2). Jesse, David’s father, is called an Ephrathite of Bethlehem (1Sam 17:12), as are Naomi’s sons (Ruth 1:2).
