Macedonia

Mas´uh-doh´nee-uh

Aregion in the northeastern part of the Greek peninsula. Paul made his first European converts to Christianity in Macedonia (Acts 16:9-17:14). He himself recalls his initial journey (ca. 50 CE) from Philippi to Thessalonica and then to Athens (1Thess 2:2; 1Thess 2:17-3:2; Phil 4:15-16) and says that he preached the gospel “as far around as Illyricum” (Rom 15:19). He also mentions a second visit to Macedonia (ca. 55 CE). (1Thess 4:10) seems to presuppose the existence of other early Christian communities in Macedonia besides Philippi and Thessalonica; on the founding of the church at Beroea see (Acts 17:10-12).
