Philippi

Fi-lip´i, fil´i-pi

An ancient city in northeastern Greece. Its site, dominated by a high acropolis and surrounded by mountains on three sides, lies ten miles inland from the modern port city of Kavalla (ancient Neapolis). The apostle Paul came to Philippi ca. 50 CE and founded here his first European Christian community (Acts 16:12-40; 1Thess 2:2). This church, always one of Paul’s favorites, received his Letter to the Philippians ca. 54 CE and one or more additional visits from him ca. 55 CE (1Cor 16:5-6; 2Cor 2:13; 2Cor 7:5; Acts 20:1-6).
