wizard

One who practices such things as magic, sorcery, divination, or necromancy. The word can refer to either a male or female. Israel was forbidden to consult them (Lev 19:31; Isa 8:19). They were banned as early as the reign of Saul in the late eleventh century BCE (1Sam 28:3), although Saul did consult a female diviner to raise up the ghost of Samuel (1Sam 28:9). King Josiah (639–609 BCE) banned them (2Kgs 23:24) after they had gained a foothold in the reign of Manasseh (697–642 BCE; 2Kgs 21:6).
