Zephaniah


Zef´uh-ni´uh; Heb., “Yah[weh] has concealed” or “Yah[weh] has preserved”

1 A priest who served as an intermediary between King Zedekiah of Judah and the prophet Jeremiah (Jer 21:1; Jer 37:3; early sixth century BCE). He was taken before the king of Babylon at Riblah and there put to death (Jer 52:24-27). 2 An ancestor of the prophet Samuel (1Chr 6:36). 3 The father of Josiah; he was living in Jerusalem in the mid-sixth century BCE when Darius decreed the rebuilding of the Jerusalem Temple (Zech 6:10-14). 4 A prophet during the reign of King Josiah of Judah (640–609 BCE).
