Ishmaelites (Ish´may-uh-lits)

Those related to Ishmael. 1 The descendants of Ishmael, who are listed by name (Gen 25:13-16; 1Chr 1:28-31). The names indicate some affinities with the Edomites (Gen 36), with whom they intermarried (Gen 28:9), and with the descendants of Keturah (Gen 25:1-4; 1Chr 1:32-33). 2 A synonym for traders between Gilead and Egypt to whom Joseph was sold (Gen 37:25-28). They are also called Midianites (v. 2).
