Jael (Jay´uhl; Heb., “mountain goat”)

The wife of Heber the Kenite, who is celebrated in the Song of Deborah (Judg 5) and in the narrative of (Judg 4) for her part in the victory of the Israelite militia over a superior Canaanite army during the period of the judges. The Canaanite general Sisera sought refuge among the Kenites when he fled following the defeat of his forces. Jael offered him refreshment and then, while he rested, killed him with a tent peg.
