Kedesh (Kee´dish; Heb., “to be holy”)

A name for several places with ancient sanctuaries; they are often difficult to distinguish from one another. 1 Kedesh-naphtali, a place allotted to the tribe of Naphtali (Josh 19:37); it is the town from which Barak was called (Judg 4:6) and where he gathered his forces (Judg 4:10). 2 Kedesh in Galilee, a site identified with modern Tell Qadis, northwest of Lake Huleh. It was set apart as a city of refuge and levitical town (Josh 20:7; Josh 21:32; 1Chr 6:76). The Kedesh where Heber pitched his tent and Sisera escaped (Judg 4:11; Judg 4:17) was probably this northern site, near Canaanite Hazor and away from the center of Israelite strength. It was captured by Tiglath-pileser III in the reign of Pekah (ca. 735–732 BCE), king of Israel (2Kgs 15:29). 3 Kedesh in Issachar, the levitical city of Issachar according to(1Chr 6:72), although the parallel Joshua passage (Josh 21:2) identifies it as Kishion, as does (Josh 19:20). This may be the town listed after Taanach and Megiddo whose king was taken by Joshua (Josh 12:22); perhaps it is to be identified with modern Tell Abu Qudeis, which lies between the two sites. 4 Kedesh in Judah, a city near the southern border (Josh 15:23).
