Adam and Eve

Adam and Eve, 1600-1800 C.E., Fresco, Abreha and Atsbeha Church, Wukro, Ethiopia.

The tenth century of Abreha and Atsbeha is one of the oldest and best-known rock-hewn churches in Tigray, Ethiopia near Wukro. The church is named after two kings— Abreha and Atsbeha— who ruled the ancient kingdom of Axum in the fourth century C.E. The murals that cover the interior walls were added in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Greek traders may have introduced Christianity to Ethiopia during Abreha’s reign and he subsequently made it the state religion. The artist is focusing on the moment when the first couple becomes aware of their nakedness.

Common Era; a notation used in place of A.D. ("Anno Domini") for years in the current calendar era, about the last 2,000 years.
