This mural of the apostle John, from the Church of Bahera near the town of Hawzien in Ethiopia, is one of many paintings of early Christian saints adorning the walls and pillars of the church sanctuary. The Church of Bahera is among several churches hewn into the rock hillsides in this area of Ethiopia. In the 1990s, the Ethiopian Heritage Fund undertook an extensive restoration of the murals. Here, John is shown with striking green and red striped robes, holding a staff. A halo surrounds his bearded face and powerful gaze.
