George Frederick Watts, Endymion, 1872. Private collection.

Endymion was a handsome mortal loved by the moon-goddess, Selene. She asked Zeus to grant him eternal youth and sleep so that he would never leave her. Zeus granted her wish. Every night, Selene visited Endymion where he slept.

Scenes of Endymion and Selene are popular throughout European art whenever artists are exploring after-death existence. It was a popular subject for sarcophagi carving in Late Antiquity. Watts was a mid-nineteenth century English painter and sculptor and had a great interest in biblical and mythological subjects.
