Sinai Desert

Sinai desert near Ein Hudra (Egypt).

The biblical Mount Sinai is one of the most important sacred places in Abrahamic religions. According to tradition, it was the mountain where Yahweh gave the Ten Commandments to Moses, as he was leading the Israelites out of Egypt and into the promised land. For the ancient Israelites, the memory of what happened at Mount Sinai was more important than the mountain itself, and many bibical scholars think that Mount Sinai reflects a set of ideas rather than a real place.

The Bible does not give a clear description of the location of Mount Sinai, though tradition identifies the mountain with modern-day Jebel Musa in the southern Sinai Desert. Others believe that Mount Sinai was on the other side of the Gulf of Aqaba, in what is now Saudi Arabia.
