Virgin and Child with Saint Anne

Albrecht Dürer, Virgin and Child with Saint Anne, 1519. Oil on wood, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

According to apocryphal Christian tradition, Saint Anne was the mother of Mary and the maternal grandmother of Jesus. Saint Anne was particularly venerated in Germany. Dürer uses rich color, simplicity of form, and meticulous attention to detail in this haunting devotional painting. Anne’s hand on her daughter's shoulder has a consolatory feel suggesting a premonition of Christ's Passion.

Dürer, Virgin and Child with Saint Anne, 1519.

A person deemed holy by a religious tradition, especially in Roman Catholicism.
