Hor´eb

Mount, the name for Mt. Sinai used in some portions of the Pentateuch, probably stemming from different tribal traditions. Here Moses was called (Exod 3:1-12) and here he obtained water from the rock (Exod 17:6-7). Here the Israelites made a covenant with Yahweh (Deut 5:2), and from here they set out for Kadesh-barnea and Canaan (Deut 1:19). Elijah fled to Horeb because of Jezebel’s wrath. Since early Christian times Mt. Horeb/Sinai has been identified with modern Jebel Musa in southern Sinai, but there are no certain geographical data for this identification.
