1 The third son of Jacob (Gen 29:34). 2 The tribe descended from 1 above. Unlike all the other tribes, it is not given any allocation of territory (Josh 13-19). On the contrary, the Levites are said to have no share in the land, because they have been chosen by God to serve as priests (Josh 18:7). Instead, they are given a number of towns to live in (Josh 21).
