Mat´uh-thi´uhs; Heb., “gift of Yah[weh]”

1 A priest who, with his five sons, called “Maccabees,” began the revolt against Seleucid rule in 167 BCE in their Judean village of Modein. His story is recorded in the apocryphal/deuterocanonical books of 1 and 2 Maccabees. 2 A name included twice in Luke’s genealogy of Jesus (Luke 3:25-26).
