Patmos

Pat´muhs

One of the Sporades Islands in the Aegean Sea. It lies about thirty-seven miles southwest of Miletus, a city on the coast of western Asia Minor. It is a small island, about ten miles long from north to south and six miles wide at its broadest point. In (Rev 1:9) John says that he was on Patmos “because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.” This is usually taken to mean that he had been exiled to the island by Roman authorities. It was on this island that he received the vision he reports in the book of Revelation.
