Sadducees

Sad´joo-seez

A group in Judaism from the second century BCE to the first century CE. The NT mentions the Sadducees occasionally, often in conjunction with the Pharisees, but does not present a coherent picture. The Sadducees, in contrast to the Pharisees, do not believe in life after death (Mark 12:18; and parallels) or in angels and spirits (Acts 23:8). But the Sadducees are lumped with the Pharisees as opponents of Jesus (Matt 3:7; Matt 16:6). In Acts, Sadducees are active in the Temple, associated with the priests and members of the Sanhedrin (Acts 4:1; Acts 5:17; Acts 23:6).
