The “king of Egypt” (2Kgs 17:4) to whom King Hoshea sent messengers just before the latter revolted against the Assyrians. The Assyrians under King Shalmaneser then attacked Samaria (725 BCE). The identification of So is uncertain, since no name similar to this one appears anywhere in the Egyptian records. “So” may refer to the twenty-second-dynasty king Osorkon IV, who ruled Egypt ca. 727–720 BCE, or the name could be derived from an Egyptian term that means “the Saite” and indicates an individual from the city of Sais in the Egyptian Delta.
