Dürer’s series, The Apocalypse, was published in 1498. The Four Avenging Angels is one of sixteen woodcuts that make up the series. The Apocalypse made Dürer famous throughout Europe for its innovative format and technical mastery. Dürer was born into an age of religious reformation, scientific inquiry, and artistic innovation and his works reflect the upheaval of his era.
