Timothy Washington (b. 1946) spent much of his childhood in South Los Angeles collecting found objects to create assemblage art. He received his B.F.A. from the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles in 1969 and would later become an influential African American artist, creating folk art celebrating black heritage and spirituality. This work, an assembly of discarded objects, including a washboard, tree branches, and a dial, personifies a figure showing unconditional love and acceptance.
